What is Joburg’s improved ICCA ranking in 2014/2015?

After an astounding jump of 92 places in 2012 [from 234 to 142], Joburg has continued its steady climb, clocking in at position 136 in 2013 and now position 101 in 2014. We have moved up 35 places, which huge achievement for Joburg as a global city. This ranking places Joburg number two in Africa.

What are the ICCA rankings?

ICCA Rankings are announced annually by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), based on the number of rotating international association meetings hosted in a particular destination.  ICCA now is one of the most prominent organisations in the world of international meetings. It is the only association that comprises a membership representing the main specialists in handling, transporting and accommodating international events.   ICCA’s network of almost 1000 members spans the globe, with members in over 90 countries worldwide.

How has this been achieved?

Joburg boasts impressive business events credentials in anyone’s book.  Aside from all the major international business and sporting events hosted here since the mid-90’s, Joburg is home to increasing hotel inventory and an abundance of superb convention facilities, all supported by a well-established and growing service sector and impressive infrastructure.

What unique transport options does Joburg offer visitors?

This includes unique transport features like the Gautrain, Rea Vaya BRT and of course, OR Tambo International Airport, which is the country’s most important travel hub.  Over 55 airlines link Johannesburg to major centers worldwide, making it one of the easiest to access on the African continent.

What type of events can Joburg host?

The City of Johannesburg can comfortably host any event – from small, professional meetings to mega global conferences and sporting events. There are approximately 130 venues in Johannesburg, varying in capacity, including the four biggest which are capable of accommodating over 5000 delegates.  Moreover, we have the accommodation stock to match – from ultra-deluxe hotels to b&b’s.

What are the economic benefits of this to the City?

In association with stakeholders, our Convention Bureau continues with its sustained bidding efforts and there is no doubt that these are bearing fruit, contributing substantial economic benefits to our local industry.
The economic benefit generated for the events held last year and submitted for this year’s ICCA rankings  –  is an estimated R 145 401 200.00.
The estimated economic impact of the list of forthcoming events [2015 – 2017] is R 179 200 000.00.
